I used Wikipedia to research Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and this is the information I found:
IRC was created in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen. It was meant to replace a program called MUT- MultiUser Talk on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland.
IRC is used as a means of synchronous communication. It's a text messaging/chat system. It can be used by individuals or groups for chat or for data transfer or file sharing.
A channel is the basic means of communicating to a group of users in an established IRC session. Users can join a channel and then all messages sent to the joined channels are relayed to all users.
Commands are entered by users and admins and allow them to control their posts and the server from their computers. Commands can be entered by prefixing them with a "/." Depending on the command, these may either be handled entirely by the client or passed directly to the server with possibly some modification.
I would not suggest that Southland Media use IRC for communications. There are many other programs and services that offer chat and file transfer/data sharing along with many other services and are also easy to use and free.
